Harvest Timing

First flush is the first harvest of new leaves after a tea plant’s winter dormancy, picked in early spring. It’s prized as the freshest, most delicate flush of the year, especially in Darjeeling and Assam, where the difference between a first flush and a later one is noticeable in the cup.
During dormancy the plant stores up energy rather than growing, so the leaves that emerge when it wakes are young, tender, and often lightly downy. Picked and processed quickly, they produce a lighter-bodied, more floral, sometimes almost green-tea-like cup compared to what the same bush will yield later in the season. In Darjeeling specifically, first flush is famous for a bright, slightly astringent character that collectors seek out and pay a premium for.
Not every region uses the term the same way. It matters most where the growing season has a real winter break — Darjeeling and Assam are the classic examples — since flush timing depends on the plant actually pausing and restarting. In year-round growing climates the concept is less meaningful.
Why Timing Changes the Cup
Because first flush leaf is younger and less developed than later growth, it has a different balance of compounds than a second or third flush from the same bush — generally lighter in tannins, brighter in aroma, and less full-bodied. None of that makes it objectively better, just distinct, which is why serious Darjeeling drinkers often keep both a first flush and a second flush on hand rather than picking one over the other.
